Description: It was the church bells that made all the difference. Alice Appleton Knowlton, a descendant of Fannie Appleton Longfellow, second wife to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, had been asked by her congregation to read Longfellow’s poem – The Christmas Bells. It was a solemn occasion, and Alice was dressed appropriately, wearing her Gabby Maria Solid Knee-High Socks. Before reciting the poem, Alice gave a bit of background information regarding the poem. His wife of 18 years had died in a tragic house fire. The Civil War raged across the land, and his oldest son Charles had joined the Union Army. In December of 1863, Charles was severely wounded and was sent home to recover. With the death of his wife, Charlie’s wound, and death and destruction everywhere, Longfellow commenced writing a poem to capture the injustice and violence he observed around him. It was Christmas Day, carolers were singing “Peace on earth.” But, noted Longfellow, hate is strong and mocks the song of “Peace on earth, good will to men.” However it was the loud and continuous ringing of the bells that led Longfellow to conclude, “God is not dead, nor doth he sleep! The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail.
