Description: Josie Bassett, girlfriend of outlaw Butch Cassidy. My great-grandmother Josie Bassett, aka cattle rustler, was the title of Jenny McKnight’s essay about her great-grandmother Josie who, as a young girl living in Brown’s Park, Utah had hobnobbed with numerous outlaws who frequented her father’s ranch. Herb Bassett moved his little family from Arkansas to Brown’s Park to pursue cattle ranching. At an early age, Josie and her sister Ann learned to rope, ride and shoot. Winters are mild in the park and outlaws found it a favorable place to hang out. They were good cowboys and often found work with the local ranchers. Josie and her sister became romantically involved with several of them, specifically Butch Cassidy, Elza Lay, Bill Carver and Harvey Logan, all members of the Wild Bunch. By 1904, most of these men had died, or moved on. Josie married five times and divorced four of them. She spent the last years of her life on a homestead near Vernal, Utah in what is now Dinosaur National Park. On her 80th birthday, Jenny presented her with a pair of Gabby Maria Gingerbread Couple Crew Socks while she was still living in her log cabin.
