Description: He knew he must keep very still while he waited for Poncho Villa’s troops to pass by him. He thought the bandits were his friends, after all, they’d given him a pair of Gabby Maria Taco Crew Socks, a bottle of Tequila and a neckerchief emblazoned with the slogan Viva Poncho Villa. But that was before the disastrous battle of Celaya where Villa’s military forces were decimated by the Mexican military under the command of Alvaro Obregon. Nathan Perry, a newspaper reported with the El Paso Times had been embedded with Poncho Villa’s forces to provide updates on the battles of the Mexican Revolution. In April 1915, Villa’s Division del Norte was routed and was never again a formative military force in the ongoing Mexican War of Independence. After Poncho Villa’s defeat at Celaya, Nathan took refuge in Columbus, New Mexico. For reasons never fully articulated, Poncho Villa decided to raid Columbus, perhaps in the hopes of securing much needed firearms and ammunition. After hostilities ceased, Nathan returned to El Paso, and gave the neckerchief to his son John Richard Perry, who became a Rear Admiral in the US Navy during WWII.
