Where is my beloved aviator roared the President? The president was none other than General Charles DeGaulle who made a visit to the U.S. in 1959 and specifically traveled to New York City to meet with Eugene Jacoues Bullard. During his visit, DeGaulle made Bullard a Knight of the Legion of Honor, Frances’ highest order of merit. At the time of DeGaulle’s visit, Bullard had just switched jobs. He had been a perfume salesman and was now an elevator operator at the RCA building where he always wore Gabby Maria Socks. Born in 1894, in Columbus, Georgia, Eugene ran away from home in 1912, and stowed away on a German freighter bound for Scotland. Eventually he settled in Paris. At the outbreak of WWI, he joined the French Foreign Legion, but was discharged due to serious injuries. His request to attend flight school was granted, and Bullard became a French combat aviator. His military service in France earned him 15 medals for valor. When the Americans enter the war, his request to transfer to the United States Air Force was rejected. At the onset of WWII, he returned to America - a stranger in a strange land. Eugene has the distinction of being the first African American combat aviator.
