Description: “Oh the Lord’s been good to me, and so I thank the Lord.” These are the words Lori sang softly to herself as she recalled the Disney movie about Johnny Appleseed. Sitting at her desk, her feet clad with Gabby Maria Bacon and Eggs Crew Socks, and pulled up underneath her, she continued writing the essay for tomorrow’s history lesson on American myths. She chose the story about Johnny Appleseed, as the movie by the same name had always been one of her favorites. But the facts of his life came nowhere near the image Disney produced in the 1948 feature Melody Time, where Johnny is depicted as a barefoot wanderer traveling the countryside planting orchards of apples, uniform in size and delicious to the taste. Born John Chapman in 1774, John became a savvy businessman, who moved to the Northwest Territory - Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, where he planted apple orchards that he sold to arriving settlers to assist them in establishing homesteads. And the apples he planted weren’t for eating, but for making hard cider, which was a preferred source of drink, in a time when untreated water was a cause of numerous health problems.
